Practical scenario
You have 30 concrete cylinder break results and must report the mean strength, the variability, and the probability a random cylinder falls below the specified strength.
Why this matters
Specifications, quality control, traffic studies and risk analysis are all statistical. Engineers who cannot quantify variability cannot defend a design.
Concept explanation
- Central tendency (mean, median, mode) describes where data sit; dispersion (range, variance, standard deviation) describes how much they scatter.
- The normal distribution converts a value to a z-score, and the z-score to a probability.
- Conditional probability updates a likelihood when new information arrives.
- Linear regression fits a trend and R² reports how much variation the trend explains.
Unit guidance
- Write units on every substituted value.
- Cancel units symbolically before evaluating numbers.
- Confirm the result unit matches the quantity you were asked for.
Handbook navigation
- Open the Probability and Statistics section of the handbook.
- Search the term "measures of central tendency and dispersion" rather than scrolling.
- Note the equation number so you can return to it quickly.
Calculator guidance
- Confirm angle mode before any trig entry.
- Store intermediate values in memory instead of re-keying rounded numbers.
- Round only at the final answer.
FE strategy
- Sketch the normal curve and shade the region asked for before touching the table.
- For 'at least one' probability, compute 1 − P(none).
Conceptual example
A conceptual probability and statistics item will ask which quantity increases, decreases, or stays the same when one input changes. Reason from the governing relationship, not from memory of a numeric answer.
Common mistakes
- Using population σ (divide by n) when the problem gives a sample (divide by n − 1).
- Reading the normal table for the wrong tail.
- Treating correlation as causation in a regression item.
Guided practice
- Work the first worked example with the solution visible.
- Re-solve it closed-book and compare every step.
- Explain the unit cancellation out loud.
Independent practice
- Complete a 10-question Probability and Statistics quiz in practice mode.
- Classify every miss by error category.
- Re-test the missed subtopic within 48 hours.
Summary
- Mean locates, standard deviation spreads.
- z converts any normal value into a table lookup.
- n − 1 for samples, n for populations.
