Materials questions connect specification, testing and field performance — and they are heavily represented in construction and structural work.

  • Concrete strength is governed primarily by the water-cement ratio: lower w/c gives higher strength and lower permeability.
  • Aggregate gradation controls workability, paste demand and segregation.
  • Steel is characterized by yield strength, ultimate strength, modulus and ductility.
