Mesh convergence and boundary condition guidance

  • Refine the mesh until the response of interest (deflection, stress, moment) changes by less than about 2–5% between successive refinements — that is a converged mesh, not just a fine one.
  • Match boundary conditions to physical reality: a "fixed" support in software is rarely truly fixed in the field; consider modeling a rotational spring stiffness instead when the connection is only partially restrained.
  • Check element aspect ratio and avoid highly distorted elements near stress concentrations (openings, reentrant corners, load points).
  • Verify units and sign conventions on inputs and outputs — a correct model with an inverted sign convention still produces a plausible-looking wrong answer.
  • A model result without an independent hand check is a hypothesis, not a design value.

Add a numerical model to document its setup and verify it against a hand calculation.

Learning objectives

  • Document model assumptions
  • Run hand verification
  • Quantify agreement

Engineering judgment

  • Software output is a hypothesis until hand-checked.
  • Mesh and boundary conditions change everything.
