Mesh convergence and boundary condition guidance
- Refine the mesh until the response of interest (deflection, stress, moment) changes by less than about 2–5% between successive refinements — that is a converged mesh, not just a fine one.
- Match boundary conditions to physical reality: a "fixed" support in software is rarely truly fixed in the field; consider modeling a rotational spring stiffness instead when the connection is only partially restrained.
- Check element aspect ratio and avoid highly distorted elements near stress concentrations (openings, reentrant corners, load points).
- Verify units and sign conventions on inputs and outputs — a correct model with an inverted sign convention still produces a plausible-looking wrong answer.
- A model result without an independent hand check is a hypothesis, not a design value.
